Before searching for an inmate in Pennsylvania, you first need to know which sort of facility they are confined to. So, you need to know if the inmate is incarcerated in a county jail or a state prison. You can get state prison inmate information from the Pennsylvania DOC. However, county jails provide inmate information via local law enforcement agencies. Here is how to search for an inmate in Pennsylvania.

  • Pennsylvania State Prisons

The state prisons in Pennsylvania are run by the PDOC. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections collaborates with the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole to give the public up-to-date information about inmates in their care. The state has a Pennsylvania inmate locator on its website that only displays information on PA inmates while excluding information on inmates at county jails and juveniles.

This prison lookup tool even features a portal from where you can upload a digital photo to help you locate an inmate via their mugshots. The information provided by the locator includes the inmate's name, Race, Date of birth, residential county, facility assigned, Registration number, and release date. Usually, the information on the locator tends to be inaccurate because it lacks government oversight. So, if your search results are inconclusive, contact the DOC for more information on an inmate.

You can also perform an inmate search for people incarcerated in Pennsylvania using VineLink or the Pennsylvania Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (PA SAVIN). They provide up-to-date information on the status of people confined in county jails and state prisons.

  • Pennsylvania County Jails

Most counties in Pennsylvania provide access to an online inmate roster with details of all offenders confined in the county jails. So, if you are looking for an inmate in a county jail, simply visit the county sheriff's official website where you suspect someone is incarcerated. Then simply go through the roster to get inmate information. If this seems strenuous, directly contact the sheriff's department via phone by checking out the Pennsylvania county prisons and administrative contact list provided by the PDOC.

The state also offers a training academy and maintains contracts with over 40 contract facilities.

The state prisons in Pennsylvania have an average inmate population of about 50,000. 37,000 more people are detained in 132 local county jails for pretrial offenders and short-term inmates. Furthermore, 7500 inmates are confined in federal prisons.
